I've had the MARPAC SleepMate for 3 years. Not only do I use this unit to sleep, I keep it on all of the time. I usually have some kind of white noise going throughout the house to block out distractions. I don't want to obsess about the noisy neighbor. I don't always want to ask the kids to turn the TV down, when they are enjoying their TV time. The little machine helps me to re-group. It's a little solace machine. It also gives me a focal-point so I may get to sleep. Helpful especially while traveling, as it can give one the feeling of familiarity and consistency.
It's travel-worthy. Using the proper country adapters, I've used this product in England, India, Finland, Australia and here at home in the USA.
It has gotten me through many-a-hotel stay.
I have a new baby (2 months) and I believe the white noise adds calm to our room.
Should anything happen to this unit, I will buy another. I may even buy another for my baby's room, when he transitions to his own space.
Yes. Get it.
Update, January 20, 2012:
Still running! Finally. I've been searching for years to find a sound therapy machine that actually sounded like a fan. I've been sleeping with a fan on since I was a kid with a father who snored, then the college dorm years, then apartment and condo living now in a house with teen-age neighbors. Lots of people coming and going so the sound was tuned out by running a fan. When traveling it is hard to bring a fan along and the on-off of the heating/air systems in the hotel rooms is typically annoying. This is the ideal replacement. I am thrilled with this machine. Sounds with water make me want to use the bathroom and bug noises don't work for me. The typical white noise sounds like static and is good as a last resort, but this has the sound of a fan which is much more pleasant to hear.Great sleep device. Relaxing noise that fades out most other noises such as cars, lawn mowers, people or loud birds outside making noises. Fades out TV sounds and people moving around the house outside the bedroom perfect for a night shift worker who needs to sleep during the day while other people in the house or outside are awake doing things. Like the dual speed settings.I bought this product for use in my apartment. I positioned it high and at the end of my bed and it does provide an adequate amount of continuous white noise for the room. I haven't tested it with the sound of lawn mowing yet but, for blocking conversations and the sounds of footfalls from up above, it works well. It was easy to use. I have it on the lower sound option with all of the holes opened up. I may have to use the loudest setting to drown out the sound of mowing. Otherwise, I recommend this for anyone who needs to sleep through inconsiderate neighbor's noise. I wish that I would have bought this product sooner! This sound screen is exactly what I was looking for. I have trouble sleeping at night and in order to block out those night sounds I have been using a Honeywell HEPA filter on high all night long for the last 3-4 years. The problem is the HEPA filter is moving a lot of air and draws roughly 250 Watts of electricity, which is a lot to be running 12+ hours a day, ever day of the year. Also its not very feasible for me to take it with me traveling, which makes it hard to sleep on the road. Electronic white noise equivilents all sound very electronic to me and I can usually hear the point of repetition, which bothers me and keeps me awake.
So I asked for and received the Marpac 980A for christmas it is the perfect solution. It draws a lot less electricity, which was something I was looking for. It creates the same sort of sound the air filter or a fan creates the dial allows you to adjust how loud it is and the type of noise one way is a mostly rushing air noise, the other is more of a pleasant mechanical hum. It also has two settings on the on/off switch, low and high.
The sound screen is a lot softer volume wise than something like my air filter, when I first turned it on my husband remarked 'Is that as loud as it gets?', however, while my air filter sits on the other side of the room, far away, I put the marpac next to me on my nightstand and it actually seems about the same volume at that proximity. It's small size (about 4.5" diameter) means I can take it with me when travelling. I also liked that it has foam padding on the bottom so it will not scratch nice furniture it is set on.
It does let off a very very slight airflow out the holes, if I put my hand right over them I can feel it, but not enough to reach my face sleeping next to it and bother me.
I wanted to note that the first picture in this listing is NOT of the 980A, it must be a slightly older model, the switch is different, the second picture is correct.
