For much of the time since then, I've taken 3 mg of melatonin before bedtime. Only fairly recently did I read that this is way more than is necessary for most people, and that higher dosages can actually cause the body to cease producing melatonin. After that I reduced the dosage to 1 mg, and the lower dosage still seems to be effective in reducing the time it takes to fall asleep. I'm going to try reducing the dosage to 0.5 mg soon.
Whatever the dosage, I usually take the pill or capsule about 45 minutes to an hour before bedtime. I've used 3-4 brands of melatonin, but for the last few years, I've used Source Naturals. One reason I prefer this brand is that they don't add anything it's 100% melatonin, unlike some products where other things have been added, such as calcium or B vitamins.
EDIT (January 19, 2012): I did not realize when I ordered these that the tablets were sublingual. After using them for a couple of months, I believe that the melatonin is delivered more effectively this way. And the taste is very pleasant, with no lingering aftertaste.

I really like this Melatonin. (Granted, I haven't tried any other brands) but this brand seems to work well. I live in the city and wake up often to street noise and I have the worst time trying to fall back asleep. Not only that, it takes me ages to fall asleep because I have anxiety issues. I'm terrified of medication like sleeping pills or sedatives, so I wanted to try to find something natural. This did the trick! I take .5 mg about 30 minutes before I want to sleep. I read or watch a TV show and soon enough, my eyes are closing on their own. If I'm woken up, which happens rarely now, I'm so tired that I fall back asleep immediately. I wake up after 8 hours ready to go and never groggy. I will say though, I have some very odd dreams (and sometimes nightmares) now, but it's a small price to pay for being able to sleep better and hey, some of them make a great story in the morning.UPDATE: It is now November (2012) and I am even more in love with this Melatonin than I was before. I work second shift and it has managed to get me on a sleep schedule. I have been weird about my sleep my whole life and I go through phases where I can't fall asleep until 4-5 am and then I sleep the whole day away. Since I have been using this Melatonin, I am on a schedule. I get home from work around 10:30, pop one of these (I am up to 1mg a night now, I find it works a little better than taking .5mg and it's also easier) and within 30 minutes, I am ready for bed. I get up around 7-8 am and I feel totally rested and ready to start my day. My life has completely changed now that I have a consistent sleep schedule and I have all kinds of time in the morning to get stuff done before work. I feel like a normal person and that is truly saying something. Before Melatonin came along I was up at all hours of the night because I could never get to the put of being truly exhausted and ready to sleep. My mind would just wander and wander and wander for hours. ALSO, I have given this Melatonin to a few friends who take Melatonin and claimed that the brand they were taking didn't do anything for them. When they took my Source Naturals Melatonin, they raved about it and said it actually worked. I think this brand is the best!!

Since I recently started night/third shift work, sometimes I need a little help getting the right amount of sleep. The 1mg dose is PLENTY one pill knocks me out for at least 8 hours, and if someone tries to wake me before I'm done sleeping, I'm so groggy that I fall back asleep immediately. The effect is so strong that usually I will split the pill into 1/2 or even 1/3 to get the effect I wan. The sublingual dosage method works very rapidly, and the mild orange flavor is inoffensive. I tried melatonin because I have a young child who often wakes up numerous times during the night. You need four or five hours of uninterrupted sleep a night for your body to repair itself and feel rested. This did the trick. When I first tried melatonin, all I could find were the 3mg ones at the drugstore. I immediately started having very vivid and bizarre dreams that, although entertaining at times, didn't promote a good night's sleep (and left me groggy later). I'm so happy to have found these 1mg tablets. One is all I need--or, if I have the chance to sleep in, two will also do nicely.
I take one every night before bed, then I read for a bit. It doesn't so much make you sleepy as relaxed and feeling like it's time to go to sleep, and when you do sleep it is a good sleep. That means that even if your kid wakes you up, you will fall back asleep easily afterward without a noticeable break in your rest.
Some people need more than 1mg; there's no rhyme or reason to why some people need more. But if you want to start out basic and try going up, this is the perfect product to try. Also, the flavor is very light and not really a selling point either way; it's got just a whiff of orange and dissolves slowly.
