Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine. It is used to block histamine release in the body. Histamine causes all manner of allergy symptoms: stuffy or runny nose, sinus inflammation, scratchy throat, itching, and hives.
Diphenhydramine is the ingredient in Benadryl, although Benadryl will cost much more than diphenydramine, since Benadryl is a brand-name drug. It is important to realize that both forms are equally equivalent in efficacy. Therefore, it makes sense to purchase the generic equivalent.
A major side effect of diphenhydramine is sedation/drowsiness. It will definately make you tired and sleepy. However, this side effect can be used as an advantage, as the medication can also be marketed as a sleeping aid. It will help you fall asleep faster and generally acts all night long. In fact, many people report a "hangover" morning effect from taking diphenhydramine the night before.
Thus, diphenhydramine has two main uses: that as an allergy medication and as a sleeping aid. Companies often add diphenhydramine to their analgesic products, such as Tylenol, to give both pain relief and a sleeping aid (Tylenol PM).
Diphenhydramine has other troubling side-effects that bear mentioning. First, is should not be used in those with narrow-angle glaucoma, or anyone with stomach problems, such as continual stomach upset or ulcers of the stomach. Second, diphenhydramine can cause a retention of urine, especially in those that have an enlarged prostate. Anyone with prostate problems should avoid diphenhydramine like the plaque. Don't take diphenhydramine with any other depressants, as the effects are additive. The same holds true for alcohol; don't take both at the same time.
The usual adult dosage is 25-50 mg, 3-4 times a day. Use the lowest effective dose to treat your symptoms. Pregnant women should avoid any antihistamines, as the medication has been known to cause birth defects.
While this is a great medication for allergies, there are better, newer antihistamines that do not produce the drowsiness that diphenhydramine does. (check out Claritin as a better, but more costly substitute).
Jim "Konedog" KoenigMy dog has allergy's(the same as we humans can get)and she also was getting rash spots due to them also until her vet told me to start giving her this, she can take it up to 3 times aday if needed.I've been doing as directed by her vet for almost 2 yrs. now and she is doing really great because of it,my sister Kim's dog also takes this for the same reasons after her vet also put her on it and has helped out greatly also.If your pet also has dry/flakey skin and scratches and their fur is dull, you need to ask your vet if your pet can take this and fish oil capsules,it also works true wonders.I have been using diphenhydramine Hydrochloride since I discovered it when I was 16. It is a very cheap non habit forming antihistamine that doubles as a sleep inducer. I suffer from mild insomnia (my own diagnosis) and often find that I tend to be nocturnal without the aid of diphen. I also suffer from mile cat allergies and some springtime allergies as most people do. I have tried claritin d another forms of antihistamines including diphen and find that they do not make much of a difference in terms of nasal decongestion. Benadryl is an expensive name brand version of this medicine that provides no more effectiveness than the off brand so it makes no sense why anyone would pay nearly ten times as much for a small quantity of it. I continue to take diphen on week nights and find that it provides a natural drowsiness and I could not put a price on a good nights sleep but this vender certainly makes it reasonable.Diphenhydramine is generic Benadryl. Amazon carries several brands of this medication for similar quantities in the same price range, so you should check what's currently available under Amazon Prime and go for the best price. Overall, though, it will be hard to go wrong with Amazon's generics, since they tend to be 10-20 times less costly than what local drugstores charge for similar quantities.
Benadryl was invented in 1943, and in 1946 the FDA approved its use as the first of the first-generation of antihistamines. Even though almost 70 years has passed, Benadryl is still considered one of the best and more powerful antihistamines. Its range of uses is pretty staggering:
1. It can be used for seasonal allergies like hayfever as well as allergic reaction to things like dog and cat dander.
2. It can help to alleviate the side-effects from psychotropic medications like antipsychotics.
3. It can be used to help with allergic reactions to other medications in general.
4. It is an anti-emetic and can help to alleviate nausea.
5. It is an anxiolytic (sedative) and can be used as a sleep aid. I have also known psychiatric units to use it in conjunction with other medications to sedate patients who are acting out.
6. It has anti-cholinergic properties and can be used to alleviate side-effects of choline-related medications like alpha-GPC and Huperzine-A.
7. It can help as a local anesthetic for itching (e.g., ringworm) when used topically (although this product would not be appropriate for that).
Diphenhydramine is not addictive although I have AA friends who feel strongly that its use might lead to a relapse. In truth, just about any medication, including this one, can be abused, so anyone prone to substance abuse should probably exercise some caution.
In the United States, appropriate dosing is considered to be 25 mg (one tablet) for allergy symptoms and 50 mg (two tablets) for sedation. Other countries like the UK recognize use up to 100 mg for things like sedation.Good value & reasonable ship time. Would not hesitate to use this vendor again!
