Everyone's melatonin tolerance will be different, especially if you're someone who naturally has a tolerance to it. If you find that you still feel groggy, try purchasing a pill cutter and halving or even quartering the dose to either 2.5mg or 1.25mg.
On top of that, melatonin can be used for more than just a sleep aid. It's a great antioxidant, it really does help with migraine headaches (I suffer from a lot of migraines and headaches, and this really seems to help.), and can help normalize thyroid function. It's a nice little supplement to keep around, just make sure you're not taking too much. For the past 5 years I have always had trouble sleeping but this past year it has been just horrible. I was lucky to get 2 hrs of uninterrupted sleep. Well, I found out about this when someone mentioned it about helping my dogs. I tried it myself and purchased 5mg tablets and 1mg tablets. I increased my dose slowly and after 2-3 weeks, I found my dosage. I actually take 10mg every evening and now I usually get 6 hrs of sleep. I do not have any side effects. In fact, I always had restless leg syndrome and that improved drastically. I have less night sweats. I feel great. I have more energy than ever. I am not sleepy at all during the day. I look younger because I am actually getting sleep. Yay! for Melatonin. Both my Mom and husband have tried it and they have had horrible nightmares. It works great for me!I dont think that natrol makes very good products because this is the second thing I have bought from them that just doesnt work.
I think that the old adage that you get what you pay for comes into play here.
It did not help me with better sleep like other melatonin products have. I have even used ones with a smaller dosage that worked better.
I am sorry I have purchased it.

NOTE: I own the 3mg versionI am a student and I purchased these pills because I was having trouble sleeping in my dorm room -I had two roommates in the same room. I'm a light sleeper and have insomnia problems to begin with, and my roommates coming in and out and snoring made it extremely difficult to get to sleep and to sleep through the night. I tried a sleep mask and earplugs, but they didn't block out all the sound or light and it was still pretty difficult, so I decided to buy these.
These pills are great. Your body naturally produces melatonin, so in moderate doses you will not become dependent on it. After buying these, I was able to sleep through the night (with the earplugs and sleep mask) with my roommates moving in and out of the room. I don't feel extra sleepy after I take one, but once I lay down to go to sleep I fall right to sleep and sleep straight through until the morning. Sometimes I wake up after 5-6 hours and feel totally rested but if I then try to go back to sleep it is no problem. Sleep quality is great and you feel rested and happy in the morning. I have experienced some of the 'hangover' effect, but in my experience it's more of a warm, sleepy feeling than a groggy feeling; I'm going to try the 1mg pills to avoid this. I've also noticed that when I take melatonin, I sometimes have very vivid dreams.
I only take these pills occasionally because I don't want to become dependent on them and because as a student I do not usually get 8 hours of sleep per night. I don't take it when I am going to get less than 8 hours of sleep because it would be hard to wake up in the morning and I would be too tired the next day. I really only take it when I try to sleep for 45 minutes or so and haven't fallen asleep, or I have an exam the next day that I don't want to risk being tired for in case insomnia and stress keep me up.
The other thing that I have done with these pills is beat jet lag. Last year I went to Thailand, which has a 12-hour time difference with the East Coast. In order to get the full experience of being there, I decided to try to adjust to the Thailand time zone before even getting there. I stayed up all night the night before leaving and then my flight was at noon, and as soon as I got on the plane I took a pill and slept a solid 8 hours (12 am 8 am Thailand time). I felt well-rested when I woke up and it was literally as simple as that. Melatonin works with the light level in order to determine your body's sleep schedule, like when it should be tired and when it should be awake, which is why it really helps with jet lag. The Melatonin 5 mg time released product is wonderful! I take one about 20 minutes before turning off my lights and I can sleep for about 7 hours straight. I have used the 3 mg with no results so I am happy the 5 mg helps. I don't have any negative side effects. I suffer from much pain but don't want to take pain pills every night. Melatonin 5 mg has helped me achieve a good night's sleep. I wake up about 15 min before my alarm goes off and I don't feel groggy getting started in the mornings. It's great to have a natural product that works.
