Sound Oasis Sound Therapy System

I bought this because I had problems waking up in the middle of the night. I can hear my dog snoring and sometimes some noise from the neighbors in the morning.

After I bought this, I had my first 8-12 hours of sleep without waking up in the middle. It's almost scary, my dog use to wake me up in the morning to go eat/pee, but with this, she stays asleep too. I'm quite happy with it.

Pros

I can't tell where the sound loop starts or ends.

It works! Sleep is easier now and small noise don't bug me

Timer mode makes the sound fade away instead of ending abruptly

Price is a little high at $99

Although you can raise the volume very high, the speaker can't handle the high volumes (you can always attach external speakers)

I purchased this clock after purchasing and returning the Hammacher Schlemmer progressive alarm clock. I was looking for a clock that would gently awaken me by playing soft nature sounds.

The HS clock was my first choice and I liked it except for the annoying beeping alarm that sounded at the end of the cycle and could not be shut off.

The Sound Oasis was my second choice. I chose it after reading several reviews complimenting its quality and the naturalness of the sounds.

The clock itself appears and feels sturdy and well-made; it is not plasticky and flimsy in appearance. It includes a number of nature sounds and tones right out of the box. I did not purchase an additional sound card since the stock sounds were enough for me.

The sound quality is good and the nature sounds do not sound artificial like some other clocks. When using as an alarm, the sound comes on low then gradually increases in volume. There is a two-stage snooze mode; the sound comes on again after eight minutes when the snooze button is hit; hitting it again turns the alarm off completely.

While I enjoy using the clock, there are number of things that prevent me from giving it the highest rating possible.

1. The time display is quite bright and cannot be dimmed. I have to cover the front of the clock to dim the light or it bothers me.

2. There is an annoying click when the alarm comes on that is sometimes loud enough to wake me even before the sound starts (I am a very light sleeper).

3. The alarm set function is primitive. Setting the alarm time is very time-consuming as you have to hold down a single button while it advances through a 24 hour clock minute by minute.

If you hold the button down for a specified period of time (15-30 seconds) the time advances more quickly in increments of 10 minutes. However, there is no way to go back and forth if you overshoot the time while setting the alarm. You have to repeat the entire process, moving forward through 24 hours until you come back to the time you want. It is a very time-consuming and frustrating process if you are not paying attention and overshoot your mark.

If you get up at the same time every day it's not a big deal as you will set the alarm only once but if your alarm time varies, it could be frustrating setting the alarm repeatedly.

Overall, I am OK with the clock and will continue to use it until someone comes out with a clock that has all the features I want and is easier to use.

The sounds are wonderful! I plug in my earphone & enjoy while I'm reading and my husband is watching TV. My granddaughter wanted to hear the sounds the other day. She enjoyed them all, and fell asleep after a minute of 'sleep surf'! My grandson likes the sounds, too, but asks me to turn it off when he starts to get drowzy. I've tried other sound machines and this is definitely the best.

Although I wanted the S-3000 (super model) I settled for the S-650

because it was shipping. I am quite pleased. The sound coming from the speaker on the unit is pretty good quality. I use mine with a pillow speaker.

I am an insomniac due to tinnitus, BPH, and houshold noises. It does help with my tinnitus and noises and just makes it pleasant to go to sleep hearing tranquil sounds.

Got for the wife for Christmas 2008 present. It sounded great (Ocean Surf) and helped lull her to sleep. Problem is after a month of using only at night (for just sound effect, no alarm clock usage), it just up and quit working. No responce to any buttons. Amazon replaced for free, even shipping costs were covered (KUDOS to Amazon). Now 2nd unit after about a month of usage, as failed also. Design and or production methods make unit very fragile to processor failure. I have now given up and Amazon will graciously refund my money and on the 2nd unit and pay for shipping it back to them too. Amazon had excellent customer service.

Sound Oasis needed to improve their design. So I contacted Sound Oasis directly and, being an electrical engineer, gave ideas on circuit improvements. Well, they must have taken my recommendations to heart because THEY sent me one and it has worked perfectly for 9 months now.

I can now highly recommend the units. They are a great device to enhance sleep.
