I've been dealing with anxiety and depression issues longer than i care to remember. My therapist had me convinced that my only option was prescription medications, and they do work if you can find the right combination. However, if you don't have health insurance as my situation became a few months back, you begin to entertain other options. I ordered this because I was recommended 5htp by a chiropractor/nutritionist that I saw. He suggested it to me for my sleep problems. I didn't even realize that it was supposed to help with depression until I read some of the reviews, but that was definitely a plus.
Before I started taking it, my sleep problems were such: I had trouble falling asleep, mainly because of anxiety, and, worse, I had trouble waking up. I have tried many things for my trouble waking up, including an alarm that rolls around my room and I have to chase after it. Nothing really worked. I've overslept so many times for important things.
Then, after taking this for a couple of days, my sleeping started to change. Instead of sleeping 10-12 hours a night, I would sleep for 4-5. I wake up feeling rested, which is good, but then I start to feel tired after a few hours and have been taking a 4-5 hour nap most days too. So this has definitely changed my sleeping...but I'm not sure if that's 100% a good thing. It does allow me to wake up early in the morning (sometimes too early), so I no longer have to worry about missing class or job interviews...unless I fall back asleep before they occur, which I could see happening if they are in the afternoon or evening.
I also noticed a slight mood improvement almost immediately. Within a few hours, I was feeling less...volatile. Normally (well, since I got depressed) I have roller coaster emotions, but this has tamed them a lot. I wouldn't say I'm happy, exactly...but I haven't felt desperate lately, either.
I didn't notice the vivid dreams that others mentioned at first, aside from the fact that I actually remembered my dreams, which is rare for me...until yesterday (a week into taking it), when I did some yard work, and I found a tick on me. I hate bugs, so I was a little jumpy for the rest of the day. Then I went to sleep...and I kept waking up, thinking bugs were crawling on me. It was not fun. Finally I decided to get up at 2:30 a.m. after 5 hours of sleep.
Overall, I'm very amazed with how much this supplement changed my sleeping and mood. The fact that I can't seem to sleep more than 5 hours in a row on this is both a good and a bad thing...but until I can find something else that will wake me up on time, I think I'll keep taking this so I can actually get to class on time and maybe hold down a job.
Update: I stopped taking it because I couldn't handle the sleep problems it caused. I was either sleeping or extremely sleepy for 3/4 of the day. I've been taking St. John's Wort instead for my depression and am still looking for a solution to my oversleeping. Thinking about switching to SAMe.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT:
As 5-HTP goes, this is good stuff and reasonably priced. It does seem to cause vivid dreams and it seems to have the effects it is supposed to. However, it should be noted that although you need take only 1-2 capsules for insomnia, the short half life of 5-HTP from "GRIFFONIA SEEDS" necessitates rather frequent dosing for depression and appetite suppression, usually 4x per day and attention needs to be paid to the timing of doses with other amino acids. Serotonin syndrome may also be an issue for some.
Whereas many important issues are not certain or resolved regarding 5-HTP dosage and usage, it does seem to do a lot of good when used appropriately. Naturally a lot more can be said and books have been written on 5-HTP. It is a product that must be used with considerable care and professional medical monitoring is advisable due to the serious conditions it is used for and its effects on human brain chemistry. [Depression, Obesity, Insomnia] Nevertheless after taking it for 3 years I can say that I have experienced no negative side effects. Also, I have noticed reduced cravings for sweets, less anxiety in social situations and have slept better than I ever have. There has also been no sign of 5-HTP being habit forming in my experience.

I was just going to order some more so I thought I would leave a review.
5-htp works good for me for depression. I cant really comment on the reduced food cravings thing, because Im already skinny and I dont eat all that much, however I do think it helps because I eat even less when Im taking it(not necessarily a good thing for me).
For sleep, I have always slept pretty deep. So I can't really comment that it changed my life in a significant way(although perhaps it can for others). But I have noticed more vivid dreams, which I guess is a good thing.
Lastly, I have tried two brands of 5-HTP but I like this one more because the pills are small and hard so they are easier to swallow and they supposedly help digestion, and they also have vitamin C and B6 which is always good.

I take one 50mg tablet every morning, and it helps me get a full night of rest. I usually wake up in the middle of the night, but I am able to get back to sleep. I wake up feeling refreshed and without any sense of grogginess. Another plus is that the 5-htp helps to reduce cravings for sweets and carbs, plus seems to keep me in a more positive mood all day.
