First, we bought the dual speed machine. After some trial and error, we only use it on the higher setting. The higher speed is louder/ and masks more noise. When we decided to buy a second one, I took a chance hoping that the single speed machine would be the same as the high speed setting on the dual speed machine. It is! Just wanted to put that out there for anyone else wondering the same thing.

Works well but I expected that considering the price. There is only the one sound of white noise and as you turn the casing it allows more or less air to rush through it, affecting the sound. There is no battery option for when we are camping so we have to take another brand with us then. The model that cost about $10 more has high and low volume, this one does not. I purchased it because I have another one that is over 13 years old. I have used 5 different brands and nothing else even comes close to lasting that long. Most others have a life span of 2 or 3 years.

This is the second Marpac SleepMate I have ordered. We use them for our kids in their rooms at night. The first one I ordered has two settings but this one only has one. It tends to be a little louder than I'd like so I cover it with a towel to mute the sound a little. If I had to do it again, I'd spend the extra $5 or $10 for the one with two levels. Otherwise, great product.

I bought this white noise machine specifically because other reviewers said it's very loud. It really can be quite loud but, by rotating the cap and collar, you can control the air intake to tone it down somewhat. My dog is very excitable and easily distracted; I wanted something to help her relax and sleep better. It definitely does the trick. Even better, it's keeping me calm and putting me to sleep like a baby!

If you don't think it's loud enough, the directions say it'll get louder with increased use. Let it run overnight for a few days and you'll probably see a difference as I have. I wasn't sure if I should buy the 580A or the dual-speed 980A, but I chose this one due to reviewers claiming the 980A wasn't much louder on the higher setting. I don't regret buying this one instead.

Also, I love the bonus adjustable sleep mask. I'd been wanting one for a while but I kept forgetting to buy one. This customer is very satisfied!

I recommend this item for anyone who has a light sleeper. Since I've started using the SleepMate my son sleeps throughout the night, without me worrying that any outside noise will wake him. WONDERFUL machine!!!!
