Next day when the pharmacy opened my husband went and got some Vicks Baby Rub. I didn't expect it to smell so refreshing since it was for babies but it has a lot of smell, not overwhelming or anything, it is a perfect-soothing smell for sick babies.
Her nose seemed to get worse when she was napping or sleeping at night so before her naps and at bedtime I would smear a generous amount on her chest, neck & back. She seemed to calm down when I put this on her so I think she found the scent refreshing & soothing.
This rubs in really well too.
Since there is not really anything you can give babies, I think this is a MUST HAVE, anything you can do is better than nothing. I also use the Vicks Vaporizor during naps and at night time, it makes a great deal of steam in a very little amount of time.
Both my daughters ended up having the same cold so I used the Baby Rub on both of them. They both would calm down after I put this on them.
This is a great thing to have on hand so you don't get stuck in the middle of the night w/out any when you have a sick/fussy baby.
I think a neat baby shower gift would be the Vicks Vaporizor, Vicks Baby Rub and Vicks Rectal Thermometer and maybe some Tylenol. Most people don't think of registering for things like that(at least I didn't) so they end up having to run out and get these items at the last minute when they have a sick baby.
UPDATE June 2011: I still LOVE this stuff but wanted to add a helpful tip I learned. I had always heard people talk of putting BabyRub on their sick babies/toddlers/kids feet when they were sick and swearing it worked awesome...I thought they were crazy! Well several times when my girls have been sick and keep waking up at night I decided to try it and Amazingly it actually works! They might still wake up a little but for the most part they finally sleep all night or at least most of it. I still rub it all over their chests/back but I also put a generous amount on the soles of their feet and put a pair of socks over that(very important to put socks on too) Lots of people only put it on their feet but I still do both, even if you're skeptical like I was, it doesn't hurt to try...especially since it works(at least for my twins) and if it is something that might help your sick child sleep better, who wouldn't try it : )This stuff works so good I started using this on my son when he was 2 /3 months old. I'd put it on his back, chest & feet with socks on it really helped him breath better at night...

Baby Vicks works wonders.. The smell is soft for a baby and it help my daughter sleep though the night. She has a cold and she is 4 months old. My mom gave me this and I put it on a small towel and lay it between her undershirt and pjs. I do not put on her skin and the vapors still work.
