The sound seems to come from all directions in our home. I am not sure how they do this but both my husband and I commented on how it seems as if we are actually camping with crickets or rain or any other sound. We were in two different rooms and felt the same about the sound quality. Even our budgie bird quiets down when he hears the jungle birds. Great product and I love the different "cassettes" that can be purchased separately. It is kind of big for a travel clock but can be done.
