StressGard II Night Tooth Teeth Mouth Bruxism Guard TMJ

StressGard II Night Tooth Teeth Mouth Bruxism Guard TMJIt's comfortable. It's affordable. It works.

I lost my custom made $600 night guard and since I didn't want to go back to the dentist and spend the money I gave this a shot. I was impressed! It was more comfortable than the last 2 (more expensive) guards I had before this one. Also I know it's doing its job because I can feel it in the morning that my teeth haven't been grinding all night.

This has worked very well and took only a few nights to get used to. I trimmed it a bit to fit, very easy. The instructions say to put it on your top teeth though it fits well on upper or lower. It felt more comfortable on the bottom teeth but I switched to the top since it seemed like wearing it on the bottom resulted in a significant overbite. When worn on the top teeth, my teeth align much better.

The low cost is a real plus, since I now don't need the custom guard from my dentist, quoted at about $400 or more.

I chose this night guard because I was looking for one that was BPA-free (Bisphenol A, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A), and the website for this product claims it it BPA-free and phthalate-free. (There's no information or documentation provided to prove it's BPA-free and phthalate-free, though, which would be nice.) Given that BPA is an endocrine disruptor, and leaches from plastics when they are heated or degrade, I would not want anything with BPA in my mouth all night. Splintek has a nightguard they say is BPA free but it's designed differently and doesn't seem like it would stay put. (Phthalates are also an endocrine disruptor

I purchased the Doctor's Night Guard Advanced Comfort (a bit more expensive than this one) from my local pharmacy. It's a boil and bite model that you can custom fit, which led me to question what chemicals were in the plastic. I wound up returning it because the company could/would not tell me if it had BPA or not. This product fits so well that the moldable kind is unnecessary and not worth the risk of BPA, etc.

No matter how much I adjusted by trimming the Strssgard II I could not get it to fit comfortably or to stay in my mouth during the night. I would wake up with it sticking out of my mouth in the middle of the night. My problem is more clenching with some grinding so I would also wear during during the day as well. Comfort still was not good wearing during the day since the worst problem I had with the Stressgard II was with the taste of the material it was made of; it made me neausous after an hour or so. Had to return the product. I would not recommend unless you need a low cost option. I would recommend spending more money where you can mold a guard to your own teeth and jaw line.

I use this Stressgard product in between the expensive custom fit guards. Note: All of the nightguards I've ever tried need to be replaced at some point, expensive or not. I found a better fit with this Stressgard while using it on the bottom jaw/teeth (my custom fit guards fit over top teeth). I didn't notice any peculiar taste. You can always soak your night guard in a diluted moutwash (your favorite wash) mixture if taste bothers you. I like this stressgard as it is inexpensive, can be trimmed, can be used on upper or lower jaw. Custom fitted guards are the best but they seem to be super expensive. It will be nice when all of these specialists that create these less expensive guards all agree to simply lower the price on the custom fitted guards since the lab prices are all relatively low, the inflated prices must come from the specialists.

Let's face it: sleeping with a bite guard isn't comfortable, you've got to get used to it. StressGard II is flexible and works with minimal discomfort. After a few nights I didn't notice the discomfort. I've had them last anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months. At some point, grinding takes its toll and it has to be replaced. I've had some other brands/models, StressGard II is the least uncomfortable and most flexible. Tip: if you find that it works for you, buy them 2 or 3 at a time.
