This is at least the fourth "sound machine" I've bought, and it's the unquestionably the best.

First, you can't judge these things straight off. You have to spend time with them. Your brain will try to find patterns, and once it does, the sound machine can itself become an irritant. With this one, the white noise is still white noise after a month. No kidding, this qualifies as a Major Achievement.

Second, the "adaptive" sound setting works. As background noise levels change, so does the audio volume of the machine -the same thinking as is used on noise-cancelling headphones I assume. (It has a microphone to sample the background, and then it adjusts for that.) This doesn't handle everything an upstairs neighbor's high heels for instance but it does work for the bleeping and screeching of the garbage trucks, no mean feat.

There's a reassuring attention-to-detail in the design. There are two speakers: a woofer and tweeter which can actually be heard. Separate functions have separate buttons, which means this can be used easily by human beings. (Interfaces well with wetware) Where appropriate, the buttons typically have leds that light to show the settings. And, I don't know if the Display button is unique, but it ought to be mandatory for all electronics. Press *Display* and it will turn off all the machine's lights after 15 seconds.

Is this perfect? No. But in my experience, it's as close to perfect as actually exists. Strongly recommended.

I had purchased one of these when I was pregnant to help me and my husband sleep. Once I had the baby, we put it in her nursery to help her sleep (as well as mask ambient noise in the house to prevent waking her up). The unit is great; it provides a wide variety of very relaxing sounds, and the timer function is quite useful as well. The biggest problem is trying to pick which sound you want to listen to.

I was dismayed when it abruptly stopped working about a year after my purchase. I tried performing the "reset" operation, but nothing helped. I honestly figured I was screwed. On a whim, I emailed their customer service. WITHIN 5 DAYS (!!) I had a replacement mailed to my home. No questions asked. It's so easy to be cynical about customer service, but I was blown away. I would most definitely recommend this product, particularly given the excellent and expectation-exceeding service I have received.

I have been looking for a sound machine for quite some time. I bought this one because of the reviews. Even though some people said that they experienced problems, they also said the company stood by their product. I bought this machine in April last year (2011). By May, I was experiencing a loud buzzing sound on the 'richness' levels. I contacted the company and they told me how to reset it, but also said if it continued they would send a new one. Well, it worked for a few more months, but then the buzzing came back (only on the 'richness' levels). I just today contacted them (January 2012), and they said a new one is in the mail to me! WOW! The machine itself really is awesome. The sounds are great and all of the added features make it even better. But what will keep me coming back to this company & referring them to others is their OUTSTANDING customer service!!! I wish more companies were like this! So don't bother buying any other sound machine ~ you WILL like this and if you have any problems at all, you will LOVE their customer service! I promise, you won't be disappointed!

This sound machine is light years ahead of the cheaper drugstore brands. I have a difficult time falling asleep and staying asleep. Other cheaper sound machines had a distinct repeating/ scrolling sound loop... I could tell exactly where the repeat was and found myself waiting for it. This machine sounds completely natural, no identifiable repeat and you can customize the depth, clarity whatever. I have used it every night for about a year and cannot praise it enough. My favorites, the rainfall, bubbling brook and waterfall lull me to sleep. I keep it turned on all night so if I wake briefly I am able to quickly drift back to sleep. Yes it costs more, but a good night's sleep is defintely worth it. I hope they come out with a smaller travel size version.

I've been using the Ecotones Duet for two years plus. Both my wife and I love it. Most sound machines are junky, but this one is a precision sound instrument. It is small, powerful, easy to use and reliable, and it works great. It really helps you fall asleep, and stay asleep. I know I sound like I work for the company, but I don't -just a consumer who feels he got a lot for his money.
