I use it for 2 reasons, acid reflux and breathing difficulties. If I could afford a nice electric hospital bed I'd be in heaven, but this is the next best thing. It gives me the upper body elevation that I need to keep the air flowing and stomach juices where they belong, in my tummy!! It's no firmer than your average mattress and I put my pillow on top of it so it's super comfortable. I slept the first night for 6 hours straight, I haven't done that in over 2 years.
The price was awesome, about half of what the same thing costs from a medical supply company. The cover fits nice, nothing special but it does the job. When I purchased it the company was offering free shipping, they sent it FedEx and I had it the next business day.
I read a complaint somewhere that this was not good for sleeping on your side, well I think that would be fairly obvious, unless of course you like sleeping bent like a pretzel.I wasn't sure if I should get the 7", 10", or 12" version of this pillow when I ordered it so I went for the middle height. That has turned out to be a good balance between being high enough to prop you up to watch TV or read and being low enough to be comfortable to sleep on. I think a 12" would actually be better for watching TV, etc. and a 7" would be a little more comfortable for sleeping. But, if you're like me and you don't have enough room to store two versions, this 10" version has been a nice middle ground.
The pillow is a fairly firm foam, so it's not terribly comfortable to put your head on directly. I use a normal pillow on top of it and that makes it very comfortable. My only real complaint is that the cover it comes with is made of a very, very light fabric and it doesn't look like it will survive many washes. We'll see how it holds up.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with this purchase.
Buy DMI 7" x 24" x 24" Foam Bed Wedge Now
First of all .... it works.. I've had a "gas problem" off and on for quite some time. It is firm and a bit slippery and it's not unusual for me to wake up about to be completely slid off of it. Which is why I took off one star. Quality seems to be just fine..Tag says made in USA!Read Best Reviews of DMI 7" x 24" x 24" Foam Bed Wedge Here
This is one of those things like a mattress everyone is a little bit different and so what works well for one person is just awful for another. This is not a pillow; it's a foam wedge. And it's not just firm; it's almost hard. It has less give than that extra firm mattress in the showroom. It has to be in order to support your weight well enough to retain its height.I bought this for recovery from acute reflux. Absolutely no way I could lay on it (my wife tried it and seemed OK, but then again, she prefers to sleep on plywood). I put a 2" latex topper on it, which probably would work for many maybe even most people. I added a several down pillows to shape it better to my back and head, and that made it tolerable.
Another important consideration is it's 24" width and length. Some people, particular a larger or heavy-set person, may have their arms dropping alongside. I'm pretty lean; this wasn't an issue for me. But I'm also 6' tall, and that creates a very common issue with these 24" length wedges: It doesn't extend far enough down my torso. This forces me to bend at the top of my waist, which puts some upward pressure on the diaphragm that of course is not good for reflux; this could be particularly true for someone with extra weight around the waist.
It probably is also iffy for side sleepers. I managed to work with the pillows in such a way I could make that work, as long as I didn't turn back and forth. It's best with reflux to sleep on one's left side, so if you can just stay in that position this isn't quite as much an issue. But it's not easy, and definitely doesn't work well if you toss and turn.
The 7" height is about right for reflux, especially if you add a topper and/or pillows as I did. My gastro guy recommends a minimum of 8" (IIRC so does Dr. Oz). Again, people are different in this respect. But 7" is probably adequate for most. But just be aware that, again depending on your size and shape, you may find yourself sliding off the bottom repeatedly. The only way around this that I can see is to use the longer more graduated wedges, the 32" and 42" products which are much more expensive.
I finally gave up on this wedge, tried yet another more expensive alternative, and ended up with just elevating the bed on risers. The sliding issue is more of a challenge this way, but at least my body is straight so surface wise it's like sleeping on the bed regularly and therefore I'm getting a much better night's rest.
The short of it is, you won't know until you experiment with it yourself. This particular wedge doesn't have the issues that many of the other products seem to and the price isn't outrageous, so it may be worth the gamble.I read all the reviews here on Amazon before purchasing this bed wedge. I suffer from GERD (acid reflux) and needed a pillow like this. I kept reading how all the other pillows smelled, even some of the expensive ones and I thought that didn't sound too good. I noticed none of the reviewers mentioned a smell with this bed wedge. So, I thought I'd try it. By the way this was the cheapest pillow I was looking at and I looked a lot. I got it 2 days ago and it is fanstastic! I adjusted so easily to it. 7" high is perfect if you have GERD get the 7". Also, I put my own pillow on it for extra comfort. Love the blue cover. Nothing slips with this pillow. It is so perfect. Again, I repeat no smell on this pillow and it is really nice quality! This is the first review I have ever written on Amazon, I think that says it all.
