Im in a technical medical sales enviroment where Im required to podium present to MD's and then field their questions. Doing this has always given me a good bit of anxiety due to the clinical nature of the discussion and the cerebral crowd. Abstract
OBJECTIVES:
Study aims were to evaluate effects of Bacopa monnieri whole plant standardized dry extract on cognitive function and affect and its safety and tolerability in healthy elderly study participants.
DESIGN:
The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial with a placebo run-in of 6 weeks and a treatment period of 12 weeks. Setting/location: Volunteers were recruited from the community to a clinic in Portland, Oregon by public notification.
SUBJECTS:
Fifty-four (54) participants, 65 or older (mean 73.5 years), without clinical signs of dementia, were recruited and randomized to Bacopa or placebo. Forty-eight (48) completed the study with 24 in each group.
INTERVENTIONS:
Standardized B. monnieri extract 300 mg/day or a similar placebo tablet orally for 12 weeks.
OUTCOME MEASURES:
The primary outcome variable was the delayed recall score from the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT). Other cognitive measures were the Stroop Task assessing the ability to ignore irrelevant information, the Divided Attention Task (DAT), and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) letter-digit test of immediate working memory. Affective measures were the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CESD)-10 depression scale, and the Profile of Mood States. Vital signs were also monitored.
RESULTS:
Controlling for baseline cognitive deficit using the Blessed Orientation-Memory-Concentration test, Bacopa participants had enhanced AVLT delayed word recall memory scores relative to placebo. Stroop results were similarly significant, with the Bacopa group improving and the placebo group unchanged. CESD-10 depression scores, combined state plus trait anxiety scores, and heart rate decreased over time for the Bacopa group but increased for the placebo group. No effects were found on the DAT, WAIS digit task, mood, or blood pressure. The dose was well tolerated with few adverse events (Bacopa n = 9, placebo n = 10), primarily stomach upset.
CONCLUSIONS:
This study provides further evidence that B. monnieri has potential for safely enhancing cognitive performance in the aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Bacopa monnieri Linn. for improvement of memory performance in healthy older persons.
STUDY DESIGN:
This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS:
The trial took place in Lismore, NSW, Australia between February and July 2005. Ninety-eight (98) healthy participants over 55 years of age were recruited from the general population.
INTERVENTIONS:
Participants were randomized to receive an extract of Bacopa monnieri called BacoMind(TM) (Natural Remedies Pvt. Ltd.), 300 mg/day, or an identical placebo. Following screening, neuropsychologic and subjective memory assessments were performed at baseline and at 12 weeks.
OUTCOME MEASURES:
Audioverbal and visual memory performance were measured by the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (CFT), and the Reitan Trail Making Test (TMT). Subjective memory performance was measured by the Memory Complaint Questionnaire (MAC-Q).
RESULTS:
One hundred and thirty-six (136) subjects volunteered; 103 met entry criteria, 98 commenced, and 81 completed the trial. Bacopa significantly improved verbal learning, memory acquisition, and delayed recall as measured by the AVLT: trial a4 (p = 0.000), trial a5 (p = 0.016); trial a6 (p = 0.000); trial a7 (delayed recall) (p = 0.001); total learning (p = 0.011); and retroactive interference (p = 0.048). CFT, MAC-Q, and TMT scores improved but group differences were not significant. Bacopa versus placebo caused gastrointestinal tract (GIT) side-effects.
CONCLUSIONS:
Bacopa significantly improved memory acquisition and retention in healthy older Australians. This concurs with previous findings and traditional use. Bacopa caused GIT side-effects of increased stool frequency, abdominal cramps, and nausea.

I'm in graduate school so there is constant studying, often with 3-4 exams in a week. Before taking bacopa, I would often find myself grasping at a thought or concept, but having it just out of reach. All the scientific studies on the effects of Bacopa monnieri extract utilize a standardized extract called BacoMind. Obviously people are purchasing these supplements in order to reproduce some pretty impressive findings in peer-reviewed clinical studies (just look up Bacopa on PubMed if you want details).
Upon opening the box of Bacopa Gold, i turned the bottle over to find that it has two separate ingredients: BacoMind and Nutrigold's own bacopa extract, which by their own admission is derived from a different assortment of plant tissue than BacoMind. No problem there, however the ratio of these two ingredients is undisclosed and the customer service department at Nutrigold refuses any request for information on how much BacoGold is added to their non-standardized extract.
Nutrigold uses catch phrases like "clinically proven" to sell this product. sorry but this claim is meaningless when they make it impossible for the consumer to asses clinically proven dosage.

Supposedly, it can take weeks, even months, for Bacopa to take effect. However, the side effects are apparent after a single dose. I tried a capsule in the evening with food and, once I was finally able to make it to sleep, I had to wake up every half an hour to urinate. I took another dose the next morning, and in addition to having to urinate frequently, I had a sort of mild headache that felt like a fluid imbalance in my brain. Other supplements and foods have had a similar effect on me, including LongVida curcumin, holy basil, and large doses of various berry juices.
Most human studies have involved daily doses less than 500 mg, so I may consider splitting the capsules, as well as making an effort to eliminate other diuretics from my diet while using Bacopa. I will update my review if I ever attempt this.

I don't know if I was wrong in expecting this sleep cap to be breathable enough for me to put my hair in rollers when it is wet, and put this cap over it to keep everything in place, and still have my hair dry overnight. My hair is long-ish (a little past my shoulders) but it is not thick. I used it once and probably won't use it again unless for some reason I need to hold a dry hair style in place, which is not something I ever do. This might be helpful for braided hair (cornrows) to not mess it up, but even then I would prefer to use something thinner on my head. This is rather bulky and is foam texture, and that little poof that they show on top is weird and has a solid plastic ring gathering the fabric loosely, so you can't tighten it. It's just weird. Maybe I didn't understand the purpose of this thing.
