I am a former teaching fellow in Physiology and I also have additional graduate education in both biochemistry and psychology. Some of my studies included neurobiology and I have a lot of meditation experience. As part of my work, I teach meditation workshops and also use biofeedback personally and for education purposes. While I know the basics of neurofeedback, it is not a specialty area. So, using this product was a brand new experience for me. This is not biofeedback as such, but it could be coupled with biofeedback for various purposes.

What this equipment does in generate patterns of light that are synchronized with sound. There are also various CDs available that couple the Proteus unit to music. I tried the system in both ways, but got the most out of coupling it with music.

The glasses provided with the Proteues are meant to be used while your eyes are closed. They generate very bright light that shines through your eyelids. In EEG work, a light strobe is used in a similar fashion to induce seizures in susceptible people or for other types of study.

The theoretical concept behind this type of technology is that one can induce certain brain states characterized by different amplitudes of specific types of brain waves i.e. alpha, beta, theta and delta. Different patterns of brain waves result in different mind states. The product literature also talks about the concept of entrainment where your brain waves synchronize to the light and sound while your brain hemispheres are synchronized or balanced.

While I can't speak to the validity of the theory, testing, etc., I could talk about my experience. In short, it was awesome and it certainly seemed to have the ability to induce different states of consciousness including relaxation and euphoria. Because I do biofeedback work, I was curious to couple it with heart rate variability (HRV) and pulse data. In my case, I seemed to reach higher levels of brain/heart coherence. This correlates with being in a relaxed, open and healthy state. That's all you really need to know if the technical language is unfamiliar.

As an aesthetic experience, using this unit was simply AWESOME! When I bought it, my expectations weren't that high. However, all of my expectations were exceeded. Because you are wearing glasses that generate the light, it completely fills your visual field. The effect is indescribable. Also, the pulsations of light induce states that are unusual and very pleasant. I found the experience fascinating and I can certainly see how this could be useful for meditation, relaxation and perhaps even pain management. I was having back pain the day I used it and I definitely had less pain afterwards. My feeling of well-being also remained after my session was over.

I am a bit surprised that this device is marketed to the general public because there is the possibility that it could induce seizures in some people. The literature and the product description provide warnings that people prone to seizures and on psychotropic medications should NOT use it without consulting with their physicians.

I'm guessing that the type of people who are looking at this product are probably interested in meditation, self development and our expansion of consciousness. If this is true, you may be interested in Integral Life Practice Starter Kit. Ken Wilber is a very reputable author and this kit is well thought out.

There are many books on biofeedback and neurobiofeedback as well. For the layperson, it is difficult to know what to choose. If you are serious about this type of technology, however, I would recommend Awakening the Mind PA: A Guide to Harnessing the Power of Your Brainwaves and The High-Performance Mind. These two books are very accessible and will give you the background you need to understand the theory behind this equipment. If you are a professional or have a strong science background, you may augment these with Getting Started with Neurofeedback.

I am a big believer in all kinds of biofeedback and have gotten good results using both Freeze-Framer ® v2.0 Interactive Learning System with Patented Heart Rhythm Monitor and Healing Rhythms from the Wild Divine Project (Biofeedback Software and Hardware for PC and Mac). The first program is a very rugged heart rate variability biofeedback tool for home use and the second combines Galvanic Skin Response with Heart Rate Variability. I reviewed both of these products as well, but in short the former is a deeper dive on one area and the second is more fun to use with game-like simulations and a very good tutorial.

In summary, I like this product a lot and it is much more interesting than the description would lead one to believe. If you are getting it, I would also purchase some of the CDs that work in tandem with it. For you technical people out there, there is a way to interface this equipment with biofeedback equipment from the same company and also with your computer for customized programs, editing, etc. If I knew I was going to like this so much, I would have definitely ordered the more high-end unit. However, this is a great product at a low price point. I recommend it highly to anyone with the medical caveats I mentioned above and that are also listed in the product description.

All I can say is good stuff. Also, I'm glad I didn't spend more money for larger memory capacity because I only use 2 of the preprogrammed and 1 that I made and transfered from the PC. I got exactly what I asked for and it functions as expected. I've been geekin' daily and my sessions are very important to me. I've always had trouble meditating but the mind machine, for some reason, keeps me glued for the time of the session. It's hard to say if it's "changed my life" but I love doing it nonetheless. The manufacturer has a web site with forums and updates and sample sessions created by users. This was a good catch.

I recently upgraded my light and sound machine from Sirius (an older model from the same manufacturer) to Proteus. I like this one much better.

It sounds superb (it has binaural beats). The lights are better (it supports red and green lights (for energizing and relaxing, respectively) most machines on the market are mono-color.

If you choose the proper program the sounds and lights will take you to an altered state of consciousness (through training and persistence).

I also use it to energize right after waking up to make me very sleepy before going to bed.

Some of the features I was telling: you can connect a CES device to it, so you will get electrical mini-pulses sent to your brain to enhance effect. I have a stereo OASIS CES unit.

Moreover, if you get a Thoughtstream unit from the same vendor that is a biofeedback device you could have programs (i.e. light and sound) adjusting dynamically depending on how you relax. BTW, you could connect both the CES and the biofeedback units at the same time (I haven't done that yet, but I have the hardware).

In addition, you can update the firmware (the biofeedback feature was added after the unit was released to sale) and upload your own sessions (there is a software). I'm thinking to create my own session for breathing exercises which go deeper as the user relaxes (getting input from the biofeedback device).

It has a disadvantage compared to the Sirius I had there is a buzzing background noise, and I learned it's from the LED display. However, the display could be turned off during a session and the sounds goes away. You don't care about the display anyway you have your eyes closed and have glasses over them.

Like its predecessor, it supports Audiostrobe encoded CDs, which is a techniques which allows a sound track to control the pulsing of the lights in the machine.

So, in short, packed with features, but among the mid-range (even a little low) price among light and sound machines.

Before purchasing your product, I would shop around on Amazon for the best possible price. There seems to be multiple listings for this product and some of them are more expense then others. Of course, the reputation of the company should also be considered and if you are purchasing any of these units, I would most certainly add one or more of the following CDs which add sound to the experience and increase the value of the product to the user immeasurably Mind Modulations AudioStrobe Collection Volume 1, Mind Modulations AudioStrobe Collection Volume 2 or even better Mind Modulations Deluxe AudioStrobe Collection.

I have anxiety issues related to PTSD and this unit was a suggestion to me by my psychiatrist to use in conjunction with neurofeed back sessions that I receive in his office. The unit seems to enhance and prolong the effects of the neurofeedback. Initially, I had a difficult time sitting still so I decided to purchase the Tibetan Highlands CD ( audio encoded CD to use in conjunction with the light strobe) and what a difference. I use this the unit every day for about 23 minutes and have never felt so peaceful. My sleep has improved as well as my daily anxiety. I don't understand the technical aspects of the "mind modulator" but it works. The light action is a bit intrusive when you first start but I adjusted within a few days and now welcomed the effect. Once my anxiety started to subside and I was able to relax -I found the visual light patterns to be fascinating. It would be useful for anyone trying to manage stress or enhance meditation techniques.

Aquasentials Slumber Spa Sleep Eye Mask

I'm normally not picky about sleep masks, so I didn't pay attention to the poor reviews before I bought this. Needless to say, I wish I had. The elastic pulls the mask so tightly around my eyes they dry out during the night and feel glued together when I get up in the morning. Also, it does NOT effectively block light. The fabrics are just too thin. Worst mask I have ever used.

This is a nice, satiny mask, with some light, comfy padding, and it blocks light very well. Unfortunately, it fits my head much too tightly. I don't have a particularly large head (at least, I've never had to look for large sizes in hats), but this felt like a tight rubber band around my head. If you have a very small head, it may be a good mask for you.

This item is great for keeping the street lights at night and it helps me easily fall asleep. It is a little thinner so doesn't work to block out the sun on a bright day, but at night with outside lights shinning in, or middle of the day with blinds closed, it works great.

This pillow was recommended for me following a medical sleep study. I stop breathing (20 times per hour) when I sleep on my back. That's every 3 minutes. Add to that the fact that my oxygen dropped 12%, and you KNOW I have a problem.

Given the choice between learning to sleep on my side or wearing a cpap machine for the rest of my sleeping life, I came out and found this turtle-like pillow to help me learn how to safely sleep at night, and bought one. I have sleep apnea, and have been trying to get a sleep program that works for me. I have tried almost everything, and this pillow was featured on TV with a popular doctor's daily show. I understand where the first commentater with the 1-star rating may be coming from. However, the user must understand how this Homeopathic medicine works. Arnica Montana does exactly what it says, only not like Allopathic drugs. Though I have only just begun using this product, I do not understand the comment from the user posting only one star. First, I was delightfully surprised by the sweet taste of the pellets. As someone who is quite fussy about taste and smell, I found no after taste at all. Second, I suffer from both fibromyalgia and migraines. While I have not yet signed up for dancing and music lessons, and thus would shy from calling the product a miracle, I have found a certain amount of relief since taking this product. (Standard off-the-shelf products like Tylenol and Advil have no effect; prescribed drugs have had no hugely positive effect either.) This homeopathic medicine has helped me with my neck pain and I highly recommend it! The pellets are best absorbed by taking 5 of them sublingually (under the tongue) and letting them dissolve slowly. I've tried another brand.........and this one is very much superior! Neutrogena Ageless Restoratives Anti-Oxidant Cream

i was previously using Aveeno Ultra-Calming Night Cream because I love that the feverfew extract keeps my face from becoming red and irritated. This night cream is above and beyond better than that ever was. This not only has the feverfew extract but also contains anti-aging ingredients that smooth out fine lines. Well, I noticed a big difference when I started wearing the day lotion in the day and the night cream at night. During the day my skin was greasier, enough so that I stopped wearing it everyday.

The reason I didn't give this 4 stars is because I would liked to have seen more of the age spots/freckels fade.

I am 27 and had fine lines around my eyes, forehead, and laugh lines. I have been using this product for about three weeks and have had wonderful results. The lines on my forehead are completely gone! My smile lines are also almost completely gone. The lines under and around my eyes have definitely gotten finer, but are not gone yet. I agree that this is a highly overpriced mask. I also agree that it is way too heavy and bulky. The cord that goes around the edges is so thick that it is not soft and pliable. It therefore leaves gaps around the nose allowing light in. The V for the nose should be cut deeper allowing the eye covers to come a little lower. It is very heavy and hot if you don't like your face covered. I returned mine for a refund. The fact that it does come with earplugs and has its own earplug storage is a good idea. Also it is made in the USA (unlike 90% of the masks out there) thus the 2 stars. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones that it fits.

It is black and says DREAM, however, it is stitched in script and not in little rhinestones as pictured. also, the trim is not pink or red as shown,but has a white material stitched around. this does not bother me. I like it but i think it's a hair too tall for me, but they don't make it worth returning. I bought one for my husband too but he likes to sleep in his side so it didn't work for him at all.So , now I'm stuck with 2for me. I'll keep it for when mine wears out. It does help my really bad acid relux, but i have to use a second pillow under my knees so I don't slide down it while sleeping and it keeps my bad back from aching so much.When I'm ready to buy a new one I'll go with the 7 inch instead.

Melatonin 3 mg by Country Life 30 Tablets

The key thing to remember here is RAPID RELEASE. I have used well over thirty brands of Melatonin and I found this on is unequaled in how well it works. Even in my childhood, I had trouble sleeping. Lights go Out and I am WIDE awake. I looked into sleeping pills, but I was unhappy that all of the over the counter sleeping pills were merely Antihistamines. Using those made me groggy in the morning, and I felt drugged NOT well rested. I am not sure who told me to try Melatonin, but I did and I found that it works well.

For those of you that find your Melatonin does not work as well as as it used to, or it does not work the way you think, then I would try this one. Although, with the quick release method, it may not keep you asleep all night, but in my experience it gives me a more restful sleep. I can usually wake up, feeling better than without it. For me, my biggest problem was falling asleep in the first place. It would seem my body prefers a 28-hour day, which simply does not work in a 24-hour world.

I buy the three MG because sometimes I need more than 1MG to sleep. IF I think I need less, I cut the pill in half. They are fairly small pills ( a big bonus for those of use who have a hard time swallowing,) and on days I need it to work faster or do not think I can swallow the pill, it quickly dissolves in my mouth and only has a slight chalky taste to it. No weird bitter taste or other sensations when dissolving a pill in my mouth. (I have tasted many a horrible pill.) [This is information no one seems to mention.]

I have tried liquid sub-lingual, and all it did was keep me awake all night, now I will not use sub-lingual Melatonin again. Which I found can happen on some occasions.

It comes in 1MG and 3MG, When I have the money I will buy both. I find that switching dosage back and forth seems to make it work better, but I am a bit chaotic so it may be related to that. Sometimes I will stop taking it for a while, if I do not need to have a regular bedtime.

I have only had one bottle not seem to work as well as normal, I think I received a bad batch. It tasted slightly different. I had bought two bottles at the time and it was the second bottle (I had already had it for three+ months), so I did not try to get it replaced. If you find it is not working, you should contact the manufacturer and have them replace it. They are a good company.

Also, You can supplement it with a certain kind of cherry juice. Many stores like Harmon's (in Utah) and Kroger (in Tennessee) have it in the cold orange juice section as a concentrate. It is a bit pricey, but it makes lots and it is less expensive than buying all the juice reconstituted. Or if you prefer you can just use the juice, but I have no idea how much a person would need, and the bottle recommends doing the amount a doctor recommends. It is a type of sour cherry, and I have yet to try the juice. If you are able you can always add a sugar to it, or an artificial sweetener to make it better.

When I worked in a high stress job, my friends and I used chug Nyquil to sleep at night. Never mind the cold and flu treatment, it put us to sleep. I still use it for occasional insomnia. So when I saw this version that omits the cold and flu meds, I decided to give it a try. It works as well as Nyquil and I can't help but think it is a little better for me. If you never took Nyquil to sleep, then I can see where this product might not make sense. But apparently there were enough of us doing it that the makers decided to go for a pure sleep aid. I didn't have much faith in this product for my occasional insomnia, but I did know I've used Nyquil in the past with good results so I was willing to try. The first night using the product, I didn't see much difference in my interrupted sleep pattern. Still awoke in the wee hours and couldn't get back to sleep. However, the second time was better and the third night was the charm slept all through the night and woke up actually refreshed, for a change. These were non-consecutive nights, by the way. I hated taking a "sleep drug" but this stuff is not much more than a small shot of alcohol with a little antihistamine thrown in.

The ClimateLine heated tube solved several of the problems that I was experiencing with my CPAP. One of the major issues I was having with my CPAP was dry sinuses and a stuffy head in the morning. The solution of course was to add more humidity; unfortunately, one of the side effects to adding more humidity without the heated tube was condensation in the mask and tube the next morning. The design of the connection to the Res Med mask is very poor. It depends on surface tension to remain on the mask. It does not swivel as the earlier design tubing does. The earlier tubing has a snap and swivel to attach the tubing to the mask. Since this new design depends on a rubber-ish connection it also becomes lose over time. I tried the tubing when I first got it and the tubing fell off during the night, rendering the system useless. I continued to use the tubing, hoping to make some adjustments to make it work. After the forth time the tubing fell on the floor during the night, I gave up and went back to my 6 year old plain tubing. When I went to my supplier of Res Med equipment, I found that even the new plain tubing now has the rubber connections on both ends.

It is obvious to me that the change in design was done for a reason other than making a superior product. Depending on a friction connection to hold during sleep is completely wrong! Those who design these appliances should be required to use them before they are placed in production. Had that been the case, they would not have done away with the snap on connection to the mask.

I purchased the GHD IV Pure Styler in Dec. 2009 from Amazon directly not a second party seller. I tried to register this on the official GHD website. The date code was not recognized a sign that this may be counterfeit. I contacted Amazon through an email and received a very quick response. They immediately sent another styler and a label for the return of the first GHD styler. I received the replacement GHD IV Pure Styler in 2 days with high hopes. Unfortunately, the date code for the replacement was not recognized either. I had emailed GHD in both instances and had not heard back from them. After 3 phone messages and multiple attempts, I finally got a hold of a customer service representative from GHD. I was told that Amazon.com USA is NOT an authorized seller of GHD products and could NOT be registered. With the high level of counterfeits, GHD cannot authenticate the styler at this time. If you do not buy from an authorized seller/retailer GHD will assume that the GHD styler you purchased is a counterfeit and will NOT register the styler or honor the warranty. Only Amazon.com UK is an authorized seller. Confusing, I know. There are other authorized online retailers. A complete list can be heard by calling the customer service number.

I just got off the phone with an Amazon.com representative. They were very apologetic and unaware of this issue. I was sent another email with a authorized return and shipping label. I wanted Amazon to be aware of GHD's policy and the fact that the GHD products they are selling are being treated as counterfeits by GHD.

So I guess the bottom line is buyer beware. I hope this helps someone else. I read all of the reviews and was wrongly assured that Amazon.com was an authorized retailer.

I bought this flat iron from the amazon dealer here because they are suppose to be a certified dealer of ghd flat irons. I recieved my flat iron today and it looked nice like the real ones but there was no hologram on the flat iron with the serial number that ALL ghd irons will have. It also did not have the proper hologram around the cord it was just a generic picture that you see on most plugs. Any ways it was a counterfeit iron and amazon is going to issue a full refund. If you are thinking of buying just keep this in mind. It might be genuine, but they will offer a full refund if its not.

I chose the white one because its not a very common color in hair straighteners. Pink and Blank can be seen everywhere else. The Box is the size of a shoebox, or even bigger and it came with 2 booklets and the Instructional DVD. Watching it wont waste your time.

Far Infrared Mat Waterproof Full Body Infrared Therapy Mat

I've had the queen sized version for about a week. I set it at a low level heat (about 3 or 4) and sleep on it with just a thin cotton sheet over the mat (as is recommended). Every night now I am sleeping on it and I haven't even tried using it for a short time on the higher heat settings yet (I should do that), but I am so happy with my sleep experience that I haven't gotten around to the higher heat levels yet. Before I bought it I wasn't sure if it would be good or not, but since my experience with other far infrared products has been very good (so far I've always been extremely happy that I've bought them) I took the leap and got this unit and so far I am extremely glad that I did. The ceramic buttons are not as comfortable as a soft mattress to sleep on, but the wonderful mild heat more than makes up for that and very soon I forget about the ceramic buttons and I relax into the heat. It is so relaxing that I expect it must be doing good things for my health. The more time I spend on it the more relaxed I get. Most of my life I have been pushing my body to do more and more and I think I pretty much stressed out my body and forgot how to relax, but now I am exploring the benefits of relaxation and heat. So far this heat mat has turned out to be better than I had hoped for. It remains to be seen how durable and long lasting it will be, but it looks to be well made and I am hoping that it will give me many years of constant use. I bought the queen-sized version of this mat over eight years ago, and it still works great. I bought it because I have hypo-thyroidism and my body temperature gets very cold at night. I also have rheumatoid arthritis. At first, I tried putting it on our bed, but the hard discs are so uncomfortable to sleep on. I tried all kinds of mattress pads, sheepskin covers, etc., but I could not stand the feel of the hard discs against my hips and shoulders. However, The gentle heat is so wonderful, especially in the winter. What I have done now is I have put this on the bed in our guest room, and I use it to take naps or to just unwind. I lay on it for 30 50 minutes. It is so relaxing and I feel the heat going right into my joints. It is not a surface heat like a heating pad or electric blanket, and it does not make the blankets or mattress warm. Rather, it penetrates into the body and heats it up from the inside. It is a wonderful technology and I believe this particular company makes an excellent quality product I really shopped around before I invested in this. However, I am giving it four stars instead of five because it is so uncomfortable as a bed mattress. I'm sure this smaller version advertised here is great for massage tables, and even couches. But if you need a really soft mattress to sleep on, like I do (or my arms and feet go to sleep), then you will have to use this on something other than your bed.
