In all mammals, including humans, melatonin is secreted during darkness by the pineal gland, which lies within the brain. It has been found helpful in preventing cardiac arrhythmia. It supports the immune system and may be a helpful adjunct to treatments for autoimmune disorders of all kinds. Some research has indicated that it might help fight both viral and bacterial infections and potentially treat cancer. Researchers have theorized that reduced melatonin production in the body may be a contributor to the documented, significantly-higher cancer levels in night workers.

Low melatonin levels have been found to be associated with learning problems, especially memory disorders, including Alzheimer's. Researchers in Italy discovered that evening melatonin supplementation in perimenopausal women improved their thyroid function and reduced depression sometimes associated with the lowering of progesterone and estrogen levels in the body with the onset of menopause.

Clinical studies have indicated that melatonin may prevent migraines and cluster headaches, and it has been used as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Studies have also shown melatonin to have a protective effect against the ravages of radioactive fallout. People who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have found relief with melatonin. And last but not least, veterinarians often recommend melatonin for dogs suffering from aggression or anxiety, including fear of thunderstorms.

There is no one-size-fits-all dosage for melatonin. Most healthcare experts recommend "titrating" the dosage. That is, start out small and work up until the desired effect is achieved, in particular as a sleep aid. Some people receive relief from insomnia taking as little as 1 mg. per day. Others need up to 5 mg., the dosage in this particular version of melatonin.

Melatonin also comes in both pills that you swallow and sublinguals, such as this product, which are dissolved beneath the tongue. A sublingual allows the melatonin to be introduced directly into the blood by absorption through the blood vessels under the tongue, rather than having to pass through the stomach and digestive system. This means that more of the supplement gets into your system, and it gets there faster.

There are dozens and dozens of producers of melatonin on the market. I am not one to argue whether melatonin works or not, I have had pretty good experience with it, but I would not recommend this particular product. As a fan of sublingual vitamins and supplements, I was excited to try this one. I took only one because it just tastes flat-out NASTY (very bitter). I also found the tablet very slow to dissolve for a sublingual product. It lingered so long it became annoying to hold under my tongue and I ended up chewing it instead. This defeats the purpose and benefit of a sublingual supplement altogether.

The customer service was also lacking. It took more than 2 weeks to receive my order, and when I emailed to ask to return the product, it took more than 2 weeks for them to reply with return instructions. I paid to ship the bottle back, even paid for Delivery Confirmation to ensure it got there. The bottle arrived, but my refund never did. I emailed them to ask about the status of the return/refund and never received an answer. Not a good experience at all.

Foam Bed Wedge Pillow - 12 inch Foam Wedge Bed Pillow - A13078 03 12 INCH

I bought this bed wedge pillow with the matching pillow case which I comes separately. I have been suffering with acid reflux and this pillow was the answer. I now sleep through a good portion of the night and the wedge is wide enough for me to lay on my side and turn comfortably. The only reason it's not a 5 is that I have a little soreness in my back which probably came from sleeping at a angle, but please don't let that deter you from a good night's rest.

This wedge can be used for a variety of purposes. The material is sturdy and it provides good support for the upper back.

The wedge pillow just arrived and I used it last night. I am not certain how it will help my LPR (larynx form of reflux), but I did notice that I was not waking up every five minutes with a mouth full of mucus.

In order to sleep, I had to use a memory foam pillow on top of the wedge, but that is probably just because I am used to a pillow.

It does have an odor, but I am going to assume it will go away as it airs out. I am not certain how strong the odor is. My sense of smell is almost gone.

It has a nice cover with a large zipper and I am assuming I can use that and not purchase a separate cover. It appears to be made out of polished cotten which is stiffer than regular cotten.

One thing, I wanted a high wedge, but I find that during the night I am sliding down the wedge so I am about midway. I had my bed elevated and would wake up lodged against the foot board which was very uncomfortable. I imagine if I didn't have a foot board I would fallen off the edge.

I'll give this a couple of months and then update.

Thermotex Infrared Heating Pad - 15 x 16" - TTS Gold

(This review is for the Thermotex Infrared (IR) Heating Pads.)

The Thermotex heating pads come in different sizes, but they all use the same heating levels and technology. The heating element in all of their units is a hard, non-flexible board-like material. They almost feel like a piece of plywood against your body (but nicely covered in high quality cloth). The available Thermotex heating pads are usually made up of multiple 3 x 8 inch pieces sewn together (as in the Platinum, Elbow, and Shoulder models), although there can also be larger size elements as in the Gold, Professional, and Large Shoulder models. The infrared energy radiates from one side of the pad only, with the hard side of the pad placed toward the body. The soft padded side does not heat. The internal elements are rigid and should never be bent (but you are allowed to sit on them or place under the feet while sitting).

We have tried other so called "infrared" heating pads, belts and light devices, but none of them measured up to the Thermotex quality the others only heated up, and some even burned, the surface of the skin. It was a long and costly search. Thermotex is the only one in the market currently (at least that I am aware of) that provides truly deep, penetrating infrared heat (about 6 cm deep after 20 minutes). And Thermotex products will not burn or dehydrate the skin.

Studies (mostly done on horses) claim that Thermotex increases hemoglobin by 25% to 28%, helps relieve muscle soreness (removes lactic acid build-up in muscles), reduces arthritis pain (removes inflammation of the joints caused by arthritis), removes sinus inflammation and congestion (enhances the respiratory system), and acts as a diuretic (increases kidney function). It can even eliminate colic (a pain in the abdomen or bowels) provided that early treatment has been performed.

I believe the above statements are true, since we have certainly experienced some of these results. Try it to treat any aches and pains (unless heat is contraindicated for the problem). This is a fantastic heating/therapy pad! BUT FOR BEST THERAPUTIC EFFECTS, ONLY TREAT YOUR BODY ON THE LOW HEAT SETTING (after an initial 15-minute warm up on High). Recommended treatment time on the Low setting is 20 45 minutes per area. Of course, when you are cold and just want to warm up your body, you can certainly use the High setting only.

To the best of my knowledge, currently this is the only consumer available heating pad at a reasonable cost that, at the Low setting, provides therapeutic heat near the optimum 9.35 µm infrared wavelength (corresponding to about 41ºC temperature).

We own a few different models of Thermotex, this way we can always find the right size to treat a body part and to reduce treatment time. Because the elements are nearly as hard as a brick and it is almost impossible for the whole surface of the element to completely touch a "curvy" human body, I have taken off 1 Star from the rating. To be most effective, the heating surface must directly touch the skin over the area being treated. Increasing the distance from the treatment area (i.e., not touching the skin or wearing thick clothing), dramatically reduces the therapeutic effect. A soft, flexible heating element (but still of the same high quality) would have been more convenient and easier to accommodate the shape of the body. At least the different Thermotex heating pad models come with Velcro straps to help affix to the designated body part.

Both the electrical Cord and the heat selection Switch are heavy duty and sturdy. The manual heat control Switch (we have these in Canada, but apparently in some countries, the newer models come with a digital switch) shows "Off," "Low," "High," and "Off" (that's right!).

As you can tell, we really like these heating pads and highly recommend them.

I have chronic back pain due partially to three failed back surgeries. My wife bought me the Thermotex Gold heating pad. It is the best pad I have ever owned. After 4 months it quit working. I sent it back and they said I broke it and they would not fix it. I explained I expected more from a $109 heating pad. After some arm twisting the Manager called me the the next day and said he had decided to send me a new one. I thanked him and my pad arrived a few days later. All in all it was very good customer service being he didn't really have to do what he did. I will be a customer for a long time and the product is excellent.

The hype indicates this is some sort of new/innovative heating pad. The Infared heating pad is no different than any other heating pad except that you cannot bend it.

There is nothing special or "deep heating" about it. It is certainly not worth the cost.

I've been a regular user of whey protein powder and was looking for a substitute as I've been reducing dairy consumption overall. I primarily add protein powder to breakfast shakes. The major complaint I've had with most of the powders I've tried is the taste or the aftertaste, which range from chalky to artificially sweet to metallic. I tried soy and egg-white powders and didn't like either for various reasons. I considered hemp but wasn't impressed with the price or the sugar content of the brands available at my local store, especially when I noticed this pumpkin seed protein powder sitting on the shelf next to the hemp powders, offering more protein per scoop at a lower price point. I decided to give this product a try and have been pleasantly surprised. The price is right: there are 10 g of protein per "scoop" (the scoop they include in the canister equals about a tablespoon). I double the serving to get 20g of protein, which comes out to about 70 cents per serving. I also like that this product is low in fat and sugars, and contains all the essential fatty acids. The dry powder has a pleasant aroma (reminiscent of mango to my nose) but there is virtually no flavor when this is mixed into other foods. No nasty aftertaste to overpower the fruit and peanut butter in my morning shake. I added it to oatmeal one morning and noticed a very slight nutty flavor in the background, but the flavor of oatmeal remained dominant. The taste (or relative lack thereof) is the major reason I'll be buying this again. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a mild tasting protein powder at a reasonable price.

I've done three stints of Vega, one full stint of Garden of Life Raw Meal and Raw Protein, rice protein, and various samples of proteins along the way but I come back to Pumpkin Seed Protein Powder because of it's efficiency, it's taste, it's texture and it's cost.

The others were full of stevia or other additives, or the texture was like drinking either sludge or chalk powder.

I can't say enough good things about Pumpkin Protein Seed Powder either you are protein-ing up for more muscle, or strength, or overall health this is the best. I highly recommend it!! Plus, no allergens!! WHOOP!!

This stuff is amazing! I mix it into oatmeal and smoothies. The taste is not as potent as many other protein powders out there, so it doesn't overwhelm whatever you're adding it to. It also doesn't make you gassy, like whey can, and beats soy protein because really, who needs to add any more soy to their diet than you already get in practically everything these days. I think it also tastes much better than hemp protein, which can be really chalky. Also, it's vegan. Great way to get some extra HEALTHY protein if you're trying to bulk up or just get some extra protein in your diet. Strongly recommended. I just spoke with the company and the product is raw. It is defatted by pressing the seeds and they sell the oil separately. Similar to hemp powder but 1.5 scoops as opposed to around 4 is needed and the taste is a bit lighter. There are 40 servings instead of most shakes which have 15-30 and it's only 20 bucks. Nice long scoop comes with it.Saving that one. BPA free. 1g fat, 1.5g carb, 9.5g protein. I would have given it 5 stars if it was pure powder but this is a real food product and I wouldn't want it altered.

Snore-No-More Pillow

This pillow has really helped reduce my loud snoring but not completely eliminated it. It is a firm pillow and takes while to get used to if you are used to soft cushy pillows. The end justifies the means though.

The pillow did indeed reduce snoring and was quite comfortable for the first three weeks. After that, what was a firm comfortable pillow lost it's shape and ability to support one's neck. I've never had a pillow that seemed to almost disintegrate within a short time. I can only suppose that either mine was made with defective foam or they're all like this. Very disappointing!!

Frownies Forehead & Between Eyes, 144 Patches

I was not convinced this product would really work, but since my friend recommended it and I thought I would try it as I was desperate. I don't find their pseudo-scientific explanation of how they work very convincing, but despite all this, I do think they help smooth out the lines between my brows. If nothing else, they at least prevent it from worsening while I'm sleeping.

The effect is somewhat temporary and gradual, but it does work. It's not as quick (or as expensive!) as Botox, but in some ways it's actually better. Botox temporarily paralyzes an area so you get kind of a weird frozen face. The Frownies will smooth the area out a bit, but still allow full movement and expression.

For the money, I think it's definitely worthwhile.

I have to disagree with a previous reviewer. This is not a hoax. And it's not really like parcel paper! Frownies work a very simple 'mechanical' way. It prevents the muscles to move just like as Botox would do. It's the same principles except it's way safer. As it is done for a limited time (night time being the best), you can't expect the dramatic results of Botox of course but you'll definitely see a difference.

I have used them for 10 years now and I have bought them over and over. But I have noticed that this is not something you can stop using. I don't really think you can 're-train' your muscles for good. If you stop, nature takes its right back and your expression lines will re-appear (same as Botox). Results will also depends on how deep the wrinkle is. I can only speak for myself here as my frown lines were slight when I started to use them.

The best thing is to give it a go and see for yourself. It's important to follow the instructions carefully (the patch must really hold tight on the skin) ie putting a patch EVERY night for at least four weeks to see obvious results.

I am 27-yrs-old and have an "As between my eyebrows" or had. I have bought such expensive creams, ranging from drug store to high-price well reputable brands. Nothing worked. A lot of women don't know that each and every batch of Botox is tested on mice and that 50% of the mice have to die from paralyzation resulting in suffocation for the batch to be considered effective (I'm not making this up, google it). I would much rather lick and stick a piece of stiff brown paper to my head every night than have that kind of karma on my conscious. Some people have complained that this product is something you can make yourself, seriously you have time to do that? I'm exahusted just ripping them apart on the pre-scored lines. Marsona 1288A Programmable Sound Conditioner

My wife and I like the sound of the ocean so we run this machine during the daytime as well as night. The digital recordings are very clear and true-to-life. We can play two sounds at once like sea gulls over the ocean. There is plenty of volume and the controls are intuitive if you're used to digital products. The only drawbacks is that I can sense the repetition in the gull recordings when I'm awake. It's a good product overall if you're an insomniac or have a baby.

Am unsure whether I'll return this or not.

This device has ~8 background sounds (2 rain, 2 waves, etc). I don't notice the problem with looping mentioned by others. There are ~8 overlay sounds which can be combined with the background noisemainly various birds. Several of the bird sounds are a little unpleasant; when I first heard the owl I thought one of my kids was hurt.

My main gripe with this product is that when you keep it close by, there is a clear static background hiss at most volumes which becomes very annoying. I think if you were to keep it tucked further away into a corner that would not be an issue.

Thinking about it now, this device really doesn't do anything that a couple of $15 nature CDs can't do, & the CDs would likely have better sound quality.

The Marsona is an excellent idea. It basically allows you to create your own mix of nature/white noise sounds to sleep by. Let me start by saying that I use this product nightly and really enjoy it but I'm still looking for something better.

Unfortunately, the built in speaker is very poor. I really couldn't get past the bad sound quality when I was trying to sleep. It was like trying to listen to a radio through a fast-food drive-through speaker.

I then hooked the line-out to my Bose clock-radio, which did make the sound tolerable. However, the sample-rate of the sounds recorded/simulated are of low quality, so they really can't be improved too much by a better speaker system.

On the good side, the sound variety and ability to mix sounds is wonderful. This provides you with a large combination of effects. If you want a surf with sea birds, bouys and loons one night, then a stream with hawks and frogs the next, it is easy. Don't like frogs? Add an owl instead.

My sleep is very important, and I'm willing to pay a lot for a better quality sound conditioner. Improve the sample rate of the sound and try again.

Ginseng is a known problem for people with high blood pressure, so beware!

I tried this product for over two months and saw no reduction in hot flashes. What I found helps somewhat is taking Evening Primrose Oil capsules 3 times daily, along with a separate Black Cohosh supplements. This product has been amazing. My hot flashes came on with a vengeance about two months ago. Nature's Answer Valerian Root

Like another reviewer mentioned, I'm not completely crazy about the smell, and when I take valerian in capsule form, it kind of upsets my stomach. The liquid is a totally different, though. I've taken this brand for more than a year, and although it still smells a little weird to me, I kind of enjoy the floral taste of it. Plus, it helps me become sleepy in about half an hour, and I sleep wonderfully. I also noticed that while I was having some bouts of nervous stomach (school stress), it seemed to help calm things down. A funny side note is that my cats *love* the smell of this, so I have to be careful: any time there's a little left in the glass, their heads are crammed down inside, trying to lick it up.

It helps me sleep, no tossing and turning. I'm not too crazy about the smell, a bit foul. Will continue to use it helps calm my nerves also.

I love lavender oil, and when I used up my first bottle of it, I decided to check out the lavender oils available on Amazon. This Plantlife brand of oil smells great! It is calming, and like some of the other reviewers noted, it works well when added to a cotton ball next to your pillow to give you restful sleep. Below are some of the other uses for lavender that I use:

1. Homemade body sugar scrub: I use my favorite homemade sugar scrub recipe and add drops of lavender to the mix. It smells so delicious and feels great in the shower.

In general, I do not care to take medications and am quite skeptical and conservative when it comes to ingesting any type of drug, homeopathic or otherwise. However, this medication has reduced my Restless Leg symptoms to the point where they no longer interfere with my sleep. I also sleep much more soundly and have not noticed any side-effects. My symptoms were extremely severe and nothing else I had tried seemed to help at all. I have not tried perscription drugs for my RLS as I am concernced about their potential side-effects.

Contour Products Back Wedge With Massage

I purchased this "Back Wedge With Massage" pillow as a Christmas present for my girlfriend. Now... I've bought a lot of Christmas presents in my lifetime. I like giving gifts. It's what really makes the holidays something special for me. Ideally, a good gift should make a lasting impression on the recipient; something to remember that Christmas by... and in that regard the "Back Wedge With Massage" passed with flying colors.

In all fairness, I probably should have read the product description a little more thoroughly. If I had read "Requires 4 AA batteries (not included)", I probably would have passed on the massage feature, because in my experience, battery power does not provide adequate run-time for something like a therapeutic massage. For that, you really want something you can plug into the wall. But I didn't notice that the pillow required 4 AA batteries, so I blithely ordered the product, never for a moment imagining what was about to befall our quaint, traditional family Christmas.

The model of the "Back Wedge With Massage" that I received, despite the product description listed here, actually required 2 C-cell batteries, not 4 AA. We found this out when my girlfriend, having unwrapped her present and (looking at me somewhat quizzically), asked what the round plastic cap on the side of the pillow was all about.

"That's where the batteries go for the massage feature" I said confidently. "I think you just take that cap off, and put the batteries in."

She then tried to unscrew the cap, and in the process managed to pull the entire massage "Unit" out of the "Back Wedge With Massage". It's easy enough to do. It slides right out.

"Unit" is a good word with which to label the electrical device employed in the design of this particular "Back Wedge With Massage". To describe it clinically, one would say that it is a smooth, beige, plastic tube. It's about the length of a standard flashlight, rounded on one end, with the diameter equivalent to a C-cell battery, and it vibrates when switched on. A smooth, rounded tube that vibrates.

It helps to keep that image in mind, my girlfriend holding the "Unit" in one hand like a candle, as it vibrates. It's that image that helps explain why I was convulsing with hysterical laughter over what I had just given my girlfriend for Christmas.

As for the pillow, the "Unit" is simply not long enough to provide a good massage. When the "Unit" is slid back into the pillow and switched on, the vibration is felt only on one side of the pillow, not throughout the whole back surface area. If the design included two "Units", one on either side, the massage experience would be improved somewhat, and I would also prefer 110vAC over battery power. Otherwise, the pillow seems fairly well made, is a good shape, provides a comfortable support against the headboard, and as a bonus it includes a convenient storage receptacle for long, cylindrically shaped objects.

The first review by JB-Also is absolutely one of the best product reviews I have ever read on Amazon. I must say it actual contributed to my final decision to purchase the Contour Products Back Wedge With Massage.

Let me clarify my reasons for the purchase, and I swear they are honorable. The main reason being for post Thoracic Outlet Syndrome decompression surgery so I could sleep upright. I learned this the hard way, and I cannot begin to explain how essential sleeping upright has helped. The second reason was it was cheap, yeah I said cheap. Honestly I could not rationalize spending hundreds of dollars for a wedge of foam I would use for a short time. All in all it is a decent product, nothing special unless you get the removable "unit" version. Although I venture to say the model I received vibrates better.

As a side note my wife and I were rather disappointed to find the model we received was laking the infamous removable "unit". It would have been nice to have a convenient storage space for my iPhone or my wife's Lily Lelo.
