Mucinex DM, Expectorant and Cough Suppressant

There are so many cough formulas on the market that it is easy to get confused on what to buy. Here is a guide:

Cough medicines are categorized as EXPECTORANTS or SUPPRESSANTS, each may be sold separately or in combination medications, like this one. They're also found in cold formulas that include pain relievers (analgesics such as acetaminophen (Tylenol)), decongestants (pseudoephedrine), and antihistamines (diphenhydramine).

This product has a cough suppressant (dextromethorphan), combined with an expectorant (Guaifenesin). The purpose of an expectorant is to loosen phlem so that it can be coughed up and out. Take an expectorant with a full glass of water, as water is an excellent expectorant. Also, drink plenty of fluids if you are congested. Hot liquids, such as chicken soup, tea and honey--work especially well. Breathing humidified air also moistens and soothes irritated airways, and loosens mucous.

A cough SUPPRESSANT works by calming the cough reflex in the brain. While it's not wise to stop a cough that produces colored phlegm (colored phlegm has bacteria in it), suppressants can relieve a dry, hacking unproductive cough. Suppressants are also helpful when you're exhausted from coughing and need to sleep. DEXTRMETHORPHAN (DM) is the most common active ingredient in nonprescription suppressants. Dextromethorphan has come under attack as not being effective in suppressing coughs. There is research on both sides of the issue, some that support it and others that recommend avoiding dextromethorphan. I personally have not found it effective in suppressing my coughs. Perhaps the very best cough suppressant is one which contains codeine. Codeine can be helpful as a nighttime cough remedy because it has a slight sedative effect on the central nervous system. It is available by prescription only.

Something to consider... since so many manufacturers now combine cough medicines with many other medicines, such as Tylenol for pain, a nasal decongestant, and/or an anti-histamine, I think it is wise to select a cough medicine that has ONLY the ingredients that are appropriate for your symptoms. That way you're not wasting your money on unnecessary ingredients, you spare yourself unnecessary side effects, and you're getting only the medication that your body needs.

Woke up a couple weeks back with what I thought was just the beginning of a bad cold; you know the symptoms stuffy nose/sinuses full of 'gunk' and a persistant cough... didnt actually feel 'sick', but knew something was 'brewing'. I took 2 every 12 hours for about a week, and, I have to admit,this stuff really does work; My cough eased up A LOT, especially at night when it seemed to be at its worst, and, all of the 'gunk' in my sinuses really 'thinned out'. Needless to say, though, I did end up going to the doctor since the symptoms were still there. (hey, I'm a typical guy, and its truewe never like to admit we're sick even though we are.) After listening to my chest & checking me out, he told me that I had Bronchitis, BUT, that taking the Mucinex daily had kept it from being/getting MUCH worse he also told me to KEEP taking it until I was better which I have. I'm not one for taking meds/pills at the slightest sign of a cold. In fact, I usually try to tough it out. However, last year, I had a bad cold that just would not quit. The worst part was my cough and the congestion I felt both in my throat and in my sinuses and nose. Just about all other symptoms went away except for this. So, I decided I'd give this a try. I have been taking the regular Mucinex for years whenever I need it with great success. I had a cold last year and decided to try the Mucinex DM for my cough, I became very jittery and felt like I was having a panic attack, I was up all night, had chills, very thirsty and the fluids were running right through me plus some. By the time I went to the doctor the medication had run it's course. My doctor told me he does not like DM in anything (not sure what DM is, but I won't use it anymore). I continue to use the regular Mucinex, it helps with colds and problems with allergy triggered asthma. This is the best otc medication out there, but not the DM. This bed wedge is firm, exactly what I want and need to make sure my top half is elevated for easier breathing. A soft and squooshy bed wedge is not what is needed when a person has pneumonia. This bed wedge is perfect, tall enough at 12" to provide some real elevation and firm enough to keep most of its height when in use. I did not find it so firm as to be uncomfortable, however. I slept quite happily and breathed more freely on it.

The cover is plasticy feeling, but that's probably a good thing since icky bodily fluids which may be accidently deposited upon it won't soak in. A friend sewed me a wedge cover which took care of the tactile comfort problem.

My thanks to the previous reviewers for their input; they convinced me to buy the bed wedge because it was described as too firm.

I really like this wedge pillow, it is nice and firm as the other reviews stated. That's exactly what I wanted, because I'm actually using it for "other" bedroom purposes: positioning aid (it's *much* cheaper than the wedges sold at the intimacy clinics). The 12" height is just right.

I am disabled so I spend a lot of time on my back watching TV. I was having severe neck pain from my shoulders not being supported all the time. Using 5 pillows to prop me up is cozy and comfortable, but it never gives proper support. I have now been using this for a month or better and man I have to tell you even if you don't have neck pain yet, buy one of these so you will never have to know that horrible disk pain that comes from poor posture over time. Olivella Moisturizer Body Lotions

Listen to me ~ if you believe none of the other reviews I am here to tell you this product is a miracle! I rarely write letters to companies but this one did it for me. I had to let them know they've got the right stuff!

I am 42 and have had combination skin that gets much oilier during the warmer months. This product is one that I have used for two years now exclusively as my night oil and it has become a mainstay in my cabinet.

Here's the trick, though. After cleansing my face (I also use Olivella bar soap) I leave my face dripping wet. One short pump and those few drops glide over my entire face, my ears AND the front and back of my neck. It doesn't take much at all but a moist face just isn't enough. Just massage it in as your face air dries and the moisture left behind is heavenly. Not the slightest bit oily at all. And don't skip your lips. No fine lines around mine and my lipstick proves it no more creeping into fine lines around my lips. They're smooth now.

I have a tendency to be a night owl so I often don't wait until before bed to apply this wonderful elixir. If I know I'll be working late into the night, I'll apply it in the early evening and allow it to work overtime.

What's ironic is that when I first started using the soap, I couldn't justify the cost of this moisturizer. It seemed far too much for such a little bit. But when I consider how much cream I had to scoop out of jars over the years, this is now an actually very inexpensive product with so much promise. I assure you whatever your complexion, your skin will thank you for adding this to the regimen.

I no longer use an eye cream, no special neck cream at all all I need is Olivella and my skin thanks me every day. Finally a product worthy of a letter and a review. Do try it and again, do not apply to merely moist or dry skin. Wetter is better and as an extra treat, when you're done, rub the residue into your cuticles. Even my manicurist is shocked over how I no longer have raggedy cuticles that I've suffered since forever.

First and foremost what i love about this product is that it's natural, is not used in animal testing, and has a very low toxicity rate (according to ewg.org) with no cancer causing chemicals, unlike most of the common moisturizers out there. All it takes is a few drops to cover the face and works best after a shower. The scent is moderately strong soap-type smell but will not stay with you for long, although some may not be pleased with it. It absorbs into the skin rather quickly so your face does not seem oily.

I find Olivella is best used overnight because when i woke up i had a fresh young glow to my skin and was pleased with the results. Some should be advised that you may be allergic to the ingredients and do a test before hand. Even if you are not allergic, when i first used the product my skin did break out but i had remembered reading somewhere how since the it can actually help normalize your skin that breakouts are sometimes a common thing in the beginning so i continued to use it. I'm glad i did because it definitely proves it's worth keeping.

I also have mix combo of oily/dry skin so i try to focus on the dry areas while using benzoyl peroxide on any areas that seem they are about to break out. I found this combination to work better than anything i have ever tried so now i can proudly say i have finally found my secret to healthy skin. Hopefully this may help others!

I want to make it clear that I am actually very pleased with this product. However, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there were a few things people might complain about, even if I don't care that much. First off, I've had trouble sleeping ever since I got back from Iraq. The doctor gave me Zolpidem to help me sleep, which I have since become quite addicted to for the past year and a half, and had to use with even more meds to keep me asleep, all of which really messed with my head and made me very forgetful.

I bought these patches to help get me off these meds, and they have worked for the past week I have been using them; I haven't had to take my meds all week. I do have to use two or three patches a night instead of the recommended one patch, so if you have been on powerful sleep meds like I have you may have the same issue. The other drawback is that they are somewhat difficult to remove, and have left big red welts on my skin where I've put them. To me, these drawbacks are very minor compared to the ability to sleep again, but I could see how others may find it irritating.

Cris Notti Sleep Masks

The material is thick enough that sunlight doesn't get through it, the eyemask is oversized, and the headband hold tight but not so tight that it causes a headache.

I tried one the memory foam eye-masks ....it was way too hot and pushed down too hard for my taste. After 5 years the elastic just started to lose its elasticity. This is my favorite (and also my boyfriend's favorite I finally got him the one of his own with a more "manly" print.

Larger from top to bottom than most similar masks so blocks out more light. Some light still gets in around nose area.

Thanks to the CPM, cryo cuff system, lots of at home exercising and a good bit of luck, I reached 115 degrees flexion and 0 degrees extension just 3 days post-op at my first physical therapy (PT) session. And 2 weeks post-op (today), I now am at 130 degrees flexion (just 5 degrees shy of the generally accepted "full flexion" range for post-op knees). Highly recommended for keeping the knee limber, flexible and active, particularly during that first week when every movement takes twice as long and hurts five times more than you expect.

The Flexmate CPM machine, which this one appears to be, is extremely quiet. You can easily sleep with it running, although you may develop a crick in your neck due to having to sleep on your back. The neck cramp is worth the increased flexion in your knee, though!

Keep looking I found this at 2,300 on other web sites so if you have to purchase one this is not the place. Keep looking and you will easily find a better price. I agree with rent if you can. These things are so overpriced.

Soothera 65046 Furry Plush Eye Mask

My girlfriend got this mask for herself and she really likes it.

I have tried it on as well, and the only issue either of us has is that the strap is not adjustable, and it is not large enough for me to wear comfortably. For those with smaller heads, this might be perfect, but for others, you may need to stretch out the strap a bit before you can really wear it for an extended period of time.

The sleep mask was way too tight on me so I was unable to wear it. Also the product is extremely bulky, so even if it had fit, I probably wouldn't have been comfortable sleeping in it.

I was really glad to find diphenhydramine in a tablet form. I personally don't mind whether it's a tablet or a capsule, but my beagle mix is easier to fool when I give him a tablet in peanut butter. He doesn't hear a capsule crunching, so he takes one little bite (just to make sure) and then swallows it whole. He is allergic to everything in the front yard and this really helps him with his itchy belly. And the price is great!

I don't know how good it is for stopping snoring but I used it for my brother when his jaw became dislodged. After going to the ER when his jaw slipped out of place they had to put him under to get it back in place and tapped his jaw to keep him from moving it. When we got home I replaced the awful tape with this chin strap and he slept comfortable with it until morning. It is nice because it can be adjusted. It kept my brother from moving his jaw for 10 hours and he slept comfortably with it.

I used to dread bedtime because I knew it would take me over an hour to fall asleep and I would wake up at 3am. L-Tryptophan has had an unbelievable effect on me. I fall asleep quickly, I sleep very deeply, and I wake up completely refreshed and ready to spring out of bed. I still wake up a few times during the night (between 90-minute sleep cycles), but I fall back asleep easily. I'm much calmer and resilient during the day too.
